World Oceans Day

World Oceans Day History

At the 1992 Rio Earth Summit, the Canadian government proposed the concept of World Oceans Day. The Ocean Project began coordinating World Ocean Day in 2002. They collaborated with other networks and organisations, began year-round outreach to all sectors to expand this global event, launched a central website for event organisers and participants, and created social media platforms for World Oceans Day.

The United Nations General Assembly passed a resolution declaring June 8th as the day to celebrate our ocean in 2008, spurred on by the tens of thousands of signatures on a public petition published by The Ocean Project and the World Ocean Network. World Ocean Day began receiving formal UN recognition in 2009, and since then it has expanded, going from 100 activities in 2008 to over a thousand events in over 120 nations ten years later.

Numerous activities are held to commemorate the day, such as special aquarium and zoo events, beach and river clean-ups, school projects, conservation initiatives, art competitions, and film festivals.  Organisations and individuals from youth organisations, schools, aquariums, zoos, museums, businesses, maritime and tourism industries, government agencies, recreational enthusiasts, including divers, surfers, sailors, communities of faith, and more come together for this celebration of our shared ocean.

The 2025 theme emphasizes the importance of sustainable fishing in ocean conservation. With over 3 billion people relying on seafood as their main protein source and 10% of the global population depending on fisheries for livelihood, sustainable fishing is essential for:

Every year on June 8, all of the United Nations’ member states recognize World Ocean Day. The concept for World Oceans Day was first proposed in 1992 at the Earth Summit by the Ocean Institute of Canada (OIC) and the International Centre for Ocean Development (ICOD). The day was initially observed globally in 2002. Ultimately, the United Nations proclaimed the day in 2008.
