Every year on June 8, all UN member nations observe World Oceans Day to promote awareness of the value of oceans. The seas, which make up around 70% of the planet, provide a haven for many different kinds of living things. World Oceans Day serves as a reminder of how crucially important the oceans are to maintaining life as we know it. Human actions are endangering and destroying an increasing amount of aquatic life every year. The message of safeguarding the oceans and sustainably utilizing their resources is disseminated through World Oceans Day.

World Oceans Day History

At the 1992 Rio Earth Summit, the Canadian government proposed the concept of World Oceans Day. The Ocean Project began coordinating World Ocean Day in 2002. They collaborated with other networks and organisations, began year-round outreach to all sectors to expand this global event, launched a central website for event organisers and participants, and created social media platforms for World Oceans Day.

The United Nations General Assembly passed a resolution declaring June 8th as the day to celebrate our ocean in 2008, spurred on by the tens of thousands of signatures on a public petition published by The Ocean Project and the World Ocean Network. World Ocean Day began receiving formal UN recognition in 2009, and since then it has expanded, going from 100 activities in 2008 to over a thousand events in over 120 nations ten years later.

Numerous activities are held to commemorate the day, such as special aquarium and zoo events, beach and river clean-ups, school projects, conservation initiatives, art competitions, and film festivals.  Organisations and individuals from youth organisations, schools, aquariums, zoos, museums, businesses, maritime and tourism industries, government agencies, recreational enthusiasts including divers, surfers, sailors, communities of faith, and more come together for this celebration of our shared ocean.

World Oceans Day 2023

The goal of World Oceans Day 2023 is to raise awareness of the value of the ocean and the ways in which we can protect it. The Office of Legal Affairs’ Division for Ocean Affairs and the Law of the Sea, in collaboration with Oceanic Global, will organise the day this year.

World Ocean Day was established by the United Nations in 2008 after they saw how significant the day was. On this day, people are urged to practice more sustainability through raising awareness of the effects that human activity has on the oceans. World Oceans Day 2023 Theme

The UN adopts a new theme for worldwide celebrations on World Ocean Day. Numerous conferences, seminars, and discussions are organized on the subject each year. Participants from several nations participate in these sessions to exchange concepts for preserving the oceans.

The oceans are essential to a large portion of humanity’s ability to survive.

The oceans do so much, including producing oxygen, controlling our temperature, and providing food. This international holiday recognises the significance of maintaining healthy oceans. The purpose of World Oceans Day is to increase public awareness of the oceans’ declining health and to inspire people to take action. Every year on June 8, all of the United Nations’ member states recognize World Ocean Day. The concept for World Oceans Day was first proposed in 1992 at the Earth Summit by the Ocean Institute of Canada (OIC) and the International Centre for Ocean Development (ICOD). The day was initially observed globally in 2002. Ultimately, the United Nations proclaimed the day in 2008.
