World Environment Day

• Celebrated annually since 1973 on June 5, led by the United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP)
• Objective: It serves as the United Nations Day dedicated to promoting global awareness and actions for environmental protection.
• Date of Observance: Celebrated annually on June 5th.
• Significance of June 5: The date commemorates the opening of the United Nations Conference on the Human Environment, which took place in Stockholm, Sweden from June 5 to 16, 1972.

World Environment Day 2024

• Theme: “Our Land. Our Future. We are #GenerationRestoration,”
• Hosted by: Saudi Arabia.
• Focus: on land restoration, combating desertification, and enhancing drought resilience.

Urgent Call to Action

• UNEP’s Deputy Executive Director, emphasised the urgent need to act on commitments to prevent, halt, and reverse ecosystem degradation.
• Also highlighted that this generation fully understands the threats to the land and may be the last with a chance to reverse the course of destruction.
• Priorities include restoring ecosystems by replanting forests, rewetting marshes, and reviving soils.

Ongoing Challenges

• Environmental Degradation: The ongoing degradation of land due to various factors including drought, which leads to significant losses in potentially productive land each year (12 million hectares lost annually).
• Food Insecurity: This land degradation results in a considerable reduction in grain production (20 million tonnes lost each year), directly impacting global food security.
• Biodiversity Loss: Land degradation contributes to natural process disruptions that lead to the extinction of 1 million species.
• Need for Urgent Action: Despite ongoing efforts, the urgency and scale of the problems require immediate and more effective responses.

Way Forward

• Restoration of Ecosystems: Prioritising the restoration of ecosystems by replanting forests, rewetting marshes, and reviving soils to restore ecological balance and enhance biodiversity.
• Global Collaboration: Encourages a unified global response, where governments, individuals, and communities work together to scale up successful environmental initiatives.
• Investment in Innovation: Continued investment in innovative solutions is emphasised to develop new strategies for sustainable management and restoration of the environment.
