UIDAI recently decided to recognise the Prisoner Induction Document (PID) as a legitimate document for enrolment or updating of Aadhaar as a special initiative to enrol prisoners across the country.

Although the effort to give prisoners access to Aadhaar was started in 2017, things did not go as planned because enrolling in the programme required the proper supporting documentation as laid by the UIDAI.

About UIDAI

The Aadhaar Act 2016's provisions led to the establishment of the Unique Identification Authority of India (UIDAI), a statutory body governed by the Ministry of Electronics and Information Technology, on July 12, 2016.

The UIDAI is mandated to give each resident of India an Aadhaar i.e., a 12-digit unique identification number.
