ECI directed Govt. to immediately halt delivery of Viksit Bharat messages over WhatsApp

The Election Commission of India (ECI) has directed the government to halt the delivery of “Viksit Bharat” messages on WhatsApp. These messages, promoting government achievements, could be seen as influencing voters during the election period. The ECI prioritizes a level playing field for all candidates. This action highlights their commitment to free and fair elections.

According to sources within the Election Commission of India (ECI), numerous complaints have been lodged regarding the continued delivery of messages promoting government initiatives to citizens’ phones, despite the onset of Lok Elections 2024 and the activation of the Model Code of Conduct (MCC).

In reply, the Ministry of Electronics and Information Technology (MeitY) conveyed to the commission that while the letters were dispatched before the enforcement of the MCC, certain delays in delivery to recipients may have occurred due to systemic and network constraints.

Note
Indian Railways is planning to create mega railway terminals with multi-modal connectivity in aspirational cities with a population of more than 10 lahks across the country under the Viksit Bharat initiative.
