About Vijay Hazare Trophy

The Vijay Hazare Trophy, officially referred to as the IDFC First Bank Vijay Hazare Trophy due to sponsorship, was originally named the Ranji One-Day Trophy. This annual limited-overs cricket domestic competition is organized by the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) and features state and union territory teams that also participate in the Ranji Trophy. Commencing in the 1993–94 season, it initially operated at the zonal level until the 2002–03 season when it expanded into a national competition. In 2007, it was renamed in honor of Vijay Hazare, who passed away in December 2004. The most successful team since the expansion has been Tamil Nadu, securing the trophy five times.

History

Before the 2018–19 season, teams were divided into three elite groups and one plate group. Two elite groups had nine teams each, while the third had ten. The plate group comprised nine new teams, with groupings based on average points from the preceding three seasons.

The 2020–21 edition faced a delay due to the COVID-19 pandemic, following the cancellation of the 2020–21 Ranji Trophy. However, in January 2021, the BCCI announced the resumption of the Vijay Hazare tournament.
