The Union Cabinet has approved the establishment of the 3rd launch pad at Satish Dhawan Space Centre of ISRO at Sriharikota, Andhra Pradesh.

Key Features of the Third Launch Pad

1. Universal and Advanced Design:

  • Versatile Configuration Support: The third launch pad is designed to accommodate a variety of launch vehicles, including Next Generation Launch Vehicles (NGLVs), Launch Vehicle Mark-3 (LVM3) with semi-cryogenic stages, and future configurations yet to be developed.
  • Horizontal Integration: Unlike traditional vertical assembly methods, this pad will feature horizontal integration of rockets, which enhances assembly efficiency and safety.

2. Supporting Future Space Missions:

  • Complementing First and Second Launch Pads: The third pad will act as a reserve, ensuring operational continuity. The First Launch Pad (FLP), operational for 30 years, primarily supports PSLV launches, while the Second Launch Pad (SLP), in service for nearly 20 years, supports GSLV and LVM3 missions.
