Case Study of the Day: The Two Birds with One Stone

Introduction

The Two Birds with One Stone – Gujarat Solar Power is a study of how the Gujarat government has innovated a sustainable solar plant with dual use of land and water for energy and food security.

Challenge

  • The Government of India had set a target of generating 100,000 MW of solar power by 2022. However, one of the major challenges to achieving this target is the availability of land. Land is a scarce resource in India, and most of it is already being used for agriculture.

Solution

  • The Gujarat government has come up with an innovative solution to this challenge. They have developed an agro-electric model of a sustainable solar plant. In this model, solar panels are installed on agricultural land in such a way that they do not interfere with agricultural activities. The land underneath the solar panels can still be used to grow crops.

Benefits

  • It helps to conserve land.
  • It helps to increase agricultural productivity.
  • It helps to reduce the cost of solar power.
  • It helps to mitigate the effects of climate change.

Implementation

  • The Gujarat government has implemented this model in several pilot projects. The results of these projects have been very promising. The crops that are grown under the solar panels are able to grow well, and the solar power generated is sufficient to meet the needs of the local community.

Future

  • The Gujarat Solar Power case study is a promising example of how solar power can be used to achieve both energy and food security. This model has the potential to be replicated in other parts of India and the world.
