Tele Mental Health Assistance and Networking Across States (Tele-MANAS)

  • It was launched in October 2022 by the Ministry of Health and Family Welfare.
  • It aims to provide free, round-the-clock tele-mental health services across India.
  • This program is a crucial part of the National Tele Mental Health Programme (NTMHP) which was established in response to the mental health crisis exacerbated by the COVID-19 pandemic.
  • Target Population: people in distress, people with exam stress, familial problems, substance use related issues, relationship issues, memory problems, financial stress and any other mental health concern issues.

How does Tele MANAS operate?

  • Tele-MANAS operates through a network of 38 tele-mental health centres of excellence across 27 states and union territories.
  • These centres offer services in over 20 languages and are staffed by over 1600 trained counsellors.
  • The public can access the service through a toll-free helpline (14416), which routes calls to the appropriate Tele-MANAS cell in their state or union territory.
  • The program is organised in a two-tier system:
    • Tier 1: It comprises state Tele-MANAS cells, which include trained counsellors and mental health specialists.
    • Tier 2: It comprises specialists at the District Mental Health Programme (DMHP)/Medical College resources for physical consultation and/or e-Sanjeevani for audio-visual consultation.
National Tele-Mental Health Programme (NTMHP)
  • It was launched by the Indian government to improve access to mental health care:
  • NTMHP aims to provide free, 24/7 mental health services to people across the country, especially in remote or under-served areas.
  • Tele MANAS initiative is a part of NTMHP.
  • The National Apex Centre at NIMHANS in Bengaluru coordinates the NTMHP.

  • It is a medical institution in Bangalore that focuses on mental health and neuroscience.
  • It is an autonomous institute under the Ministry of Health and Family Welfare (GOI)
  • It was Founded in 1847 as the Bangalore Lunatic Asylum.
  • It was recently honoured with the “Nelson Mandela Award” for Health Promotion by the World Health Organization (WHO) for 2024.
