About Spotted Locust
- It is commonly known as the spotted grasshopper. It belongs to the Pyrgomorphidae
- This species is primarily found in tropical and subtropical regions, including parts of Africa, Asia and the Pacific.
- Physical Appearance: They are distinguished by their coloration, which includes spots or stripes that help them blend into their environment. They have long hind legs adapted for jumping.
- Migration Patterns: They can migrate over long distances—some species can travel up to 200 km in a single day.
- Impact on Agriculture:
Spotted locusts cause severe damage to various crops, including coconut, banana, cardamom, and vegetables. Their attack results in complete loss of crops within a short period of time.
