Social Service League

In 1911, the Social Service League was established by prominent Servants of India Society member Narayan Malhar Joshi. The movement’s goals were to improve the standard of living and employment for the majority of people and to “collect, investigate, and discuss social facts and social issues with a view to influencing public opinion on questions of social service.”

Social Service League Founder

Social Service League’s founder is Narayan Malhar Joshi. Indian trade unionist Narayan Malhar Joshi, who lived from 5 June 1879 to 30 May 1955, was a devotee of Gopal Krishna Gokhale. In 1920, Joshi and Lala Lajpat Rai founded the All India Trade Union Congress after becoming interested in labour concerns. He served as the AITUC’s general secretary twice, from 1940 to 1948 and 1925 to 1929. He left the AITUC in 1931 to found the All India Trade Union Federation.

Social Service League Aim

This effort intends to educate the expanding student population about environmental protection and equip them with the skills necessary to safeguard water, air, and soil. It also aims to give out seedlings to school personnel and students to encourage them to grow a vegetable garden at home in a similar manner to what we do at school. Additionally, it wants to send saplings to nearby homes in order to encourage the development of vegetable gardens there and ensure that they are properly maintained.

Social Service League Feature

The League ran training programmes for volunteers whose skills were eventually used for welfare programmes for the underprivileged and the impoverished as well as relief work among those affected by famines, epidemics, floods, and other calamities. He served as the Bombay Textile Labor Union’s president. He is regarded as a pioneer in Modern Indian Social Work, among other things.

N M Joshi founded a group known as the Sahakari Manoranjan Mandal on September 20th, 1922. The “sahakari” ran a training programme for theatre performers, and many sangeet natak plays that were written and directed by mill workers went on to be successfully performed after that.
