The Union Cabinet has approved a package that will provide up to ₹5 lakh each to tribal households and villages across the country, to turn their homes into tourist homestays. This is one of the 25 interventions planned under the Pradhan Mantri-Janjatiya Unnat Gram Abhiyan (PMJUGA).

Pradhan Mantri Janjatiya Unnat Gram Abhiyan (PMJUGA) is a government initiative aimed at improving the socio-economic conditions of India’s tribal populations. Approved in 2024 with a budget of ₹79,156 crore, the program targets over 63,000 tribal-majority villages, affecting more than five crore tribal people across 30 states and Union Territories.

Focus Areas of the Scheme
The program’s key focus is on holistic development through a convergence of government schemes, addressing gaps in critical infrastructure, healthcare, education, and livelihoods. Initiatives include improving housing under the PMAY-Gramin scheme, enhancing road and digital connectivity, and promoting healthcare services through mobile medical units and Ayushman Bharat.
The scheme also aims to provide skill development, sustainable livelihood options, and tribal-centric marketing facilities to ensure fair pricing for tribal products. Additionally, the initiative targets diagnosis and management of sickle cell disease, a prevalent condition among tribal communities, and promotes educational infrastructure upgrades, especially in tribal schools and hostels.

- Tribal Home Stay: Promoting tourism in tribal areas by providing financial assistance to establish home stays.
- Sustainable Livelihood Forest Right Holders (FRA): Convergence of schemes to benefit FRA patta holders by providing support for forest conservation, sustainable livelihoods, and expediting pending FRA claims.
- Advance facilities for diagnosis of Sickle Cell Disease: Establishing Centers of Competence for the diagnosis and management of Sickle Cell Disease to reduce its prevalence.
- Tribal Multipurpose Marketing Centre: Setting up 100 TMMCs to promote the effective marketing of tribal products, improve infrastructure, and ensure fair prices for producers.
