PLI Scheme for Advanced Chemistry Cells

Context: The Ministry of Heavy Industries (MHI) has selected Reliance Industries Ltd. as the successful bidder under the Production Linked Incentive (PLI) Scheme for Advanced Chemistry Cell (ACC) Battery Storage.

PLI Scheme for Advanced Chemistry Cells

  • The scheme is called the National Programme on Advanced Chemistry Cell (ACC) Battery Storage.
  • Nodal Ministry: Ministry of Heavy Industries
  • Aim:
    • To promote the manufacturing of technology-agnostic ACCs within the country
    • To foster innovation and self-reliance in the renewable energy sector.
  • Target:
    • To establish a total ACC manufacturing capacity of 50 gigawatt-hours (GWh) and an additional 5 GWh for specialised ACC technologies.
  • Domestic Value Addition Requirements:
    • The beneficiary has to ensure achieving a domestic value addition of at-least 25% and incur the mandatory investment (₹ 225 crore /GWh) within 2 Years.
    • Raise it to 60% domestic value addition within 5 Years
What are Advanced Chemistry Cells(ACCs)?
  • ACCs are advanced storage technologies that store electric energy as electrochemical or chemical energy and convert it back to electric energy as and when required.
  • Features:
    • Improved energy density
    • longer lifespan
    • Enhanced safety compared to traditional battery chemistries like lead-acid or nickel-metal hydride.
