In 2011, the Election Commission of India (ECI) took a significant step by introducing National Voters’ Day, responding to a growing concern raised by the then-Information and Broadcasting Minister, Ambika Soni. She drew attention to the increasing apathy among new voters, particularly those who had recently turned 18, regarding their reluctance to enroll in electoral rolls. In response to this concern and under the leadership of then Prime Minister Manmohan Singh, the government approved a proposal from the law ministry to launch a campaign addressing this issue.
