National Farmer’s Day 2023: Historical Background

Chaudhary Charan Singh, born in 1902 in Noorpur, Uttar Pradesh’s Meerut, hailed from a family of farmers. His significant contributions to the welfare of farmers and the agricultural sector marked his tenure as the Prime Minister of India from 1979 to 1980.

Renowned for his pioneering efforts to uplift the farming community, Charan Singh implemented various welfare schemes aimed at improving the conditions of farmers. In recognition of his dedicated service and impactful initiatives, the government decided in 2001 to designate his birth anniversary as Kisan Diwas or National Farmer’s Day.

Charan Singh’s influence extended beyond his role as Prime Minister; he served as the Chief Minister of Uttar Pradesh on two occasions. During his tenure, he played a pivotal role in reshaping land reforms throughout the state.

In 1939, he presented the Debt Redemption Bill, a crucial legislation that liberated farmers from the burdens imposed by moneylenders. Additionally, Charan Singh authored several books addressing topics such as zamindari abolition and land reforms, showcasing his commitment to agricultural reform.

In 1978, Charan Singh established the Kisan Trust, a non-political and non-profit organization to educate rural communities about injustice and foster solidarity among them. This initiative aimed to empower farmers and address the challenges they faced, reflecting Charan Singh’s dedication to the well-being of the agricultural community.
