Three Prolonged Strategy of the Mission LiFE

  • First: Nudging individuals to practice simple yet effective environment-friendly actions in their daily lives (demand).
  • Ex: Switching off vehicle engines at traffic lights, turning off taps when not in use and switching to alternatives to single-use plastic bags.
  • Second: Enabling industries and markets to respond swiftly to the changing demand (supply).
  • Ex: Alternatives to single-use plastics.
  • Third: Influence government and industrial policy to ensure sustainable consumption and production (policy).
  • Ex: Electric mobility.

Mission LiFE Features and Benefits

  • Replace use and throw economy: It aims to replace prevalent ‘use-and-dispose’ economy with a circular economy, which would be defined by mindful and deliberate utilization.
  • Leverage social networks: It seeks to leverage the strength of social networks to influence social norms and practices to drive the campaign.
  • Global individual networks: The mission aims to create and nurture a global network of individuals, called ‘Pro-Planet People’ (P3), who will have a shared commitment to adopt and promote environmentally friendly lifestyles.
  • Differentiated approach: The mission recognises that accountability is relative to contribution. People who are responsible for higher emission will have higher accountability. Each stakeholder is nudged to act based on their ability.

Mission LiFE Need for Individual Actions

  • According to the UNEP, more than two-thirds of greenhouse gas emissions are attributed to household consumption and lifestyles of people.
  • Urgent cuts to global emissions can only be achieved by adopting greener consumption habits at individual levels.

India’s Initiatives on Global Platform Mission LiFE

International Solar Alliance:

  • The International Solar Alliance (ISA) is a collaborative platform for increased deployment of solar energy technologies for bringing energy access, ensuring energy security, and driving energy transition in its member states.
  • The ISA was jointly conceptualized by India and France on the sidelines of the 21st Conference of Parties (COP21) to the UNFCCC held in Paris in 2015.

One Sun One World One Grid

  • It is an initiative of ISA that aims to aid in developing a worldwide grid through which clean energy can be transmitted anywhere, anytime.
  • It also aims to reduce storage needs and enhance the viability of solar projects. Its ultimate goal is to reduce carbon footprints and cost of energy.

Mission LiFE: Coalition for Disaster Resilient Infrastructure

  • It is a multilateral grouping of national governments, UN agencies and programmes, multilateral financing mechanisms, the private sector, and knowledge institutions that aims to promote the resilience of new and existing infrastructure systems to climate and disaster risks in support of sustainable development.
  • It was launched by Indian Prime Minister during his speech at the UN Climate Action Summit in 2019. Currently, there are 22 countries and 7 organisations  as members
