What is MedTech Mitra?

The Indian Health Minister launched “MedTech Mitra” to empower medical technology innovators and startups. The initiative aims to support research, navigate regulatory processes, and promote indigenous development of affordable, high-quality MedTech devices, aiming to reduce the current 80% import dependence. It aligns with the government’s broader push for health sector innovation and improved healthcare services.MedTech, short for Medical Technology, covers a broad spectrum of healthcare innovations such as MRI machines, pacemakers, insulin pumps, and surgical instruments.

MedTech Mitra Portal

The online portal is designed to aid medtech innovators in clinical evaluation, regulatory facilitation, and the adoption of new products. Coordinated jointly by the Indian Council of Medical Research (ICMR) and the Central Drugs Standard Control Organisation (CDSCO), it operates under the guidance of NITI Aayog’s Atal Innovation Mission. Together with the recent medical devices policy and the production-linked incentive scheme, the MedTech Mitra platform will bolster the medical devices sector and promote domestic manufacturing of these essential devices.
