Major Ports in India Achieve Historic Milestones in FY 2024-25

India’s Major Ports have always shown outstanding development in the last ten years, with FY 2024-25 being a benchmark year in the handling of cargo, operational efficiency, and infrastructure modernisation.

Growth Rate of Major Ports in India

In FY 2024-25, Major Ports achieved a high growth rate of 4.3% in handling cargo, from 819 million tonnes in FY 2023-24 to ~855 million tonnes in FY 2024-25.
This growth is a testament to the strength and ability of Major Ports to absorb increasing volumes of trade.
Traffic growth was spurred by increased container throughput (10%), handling of fertiliser cargo (13%), POL cargo handling (3%), and miscellaneous commodity handling (31%) over the last fiscal year.
Amongst commodities serviced at Major Ports, Petroleum, Oil, and Lubricants (POL) such as crude, petroleum products, and LPG/LNG topped the lists with a share of 254.5 million tonnes (29.8%), followed by containers at 193.5 million tonnes (22.6%), coal at 186.6 million tonnes (21.8%), and other cargo segments such as iron ore, pellets, fertilizers, and others during FY 2024-25.

Achievements of Major Ports in India

For the first time in Major Ports’ history, Paradip Port Authority (PPA) and Deendayal Port Authority (DPA) crossed the 150-million-tonne cargo handling milestone, solidifying their positions as pivotal centres of maritime commerce and operational efficiency.
At the same time, Jawaharlal Nehru Port Authority (JNPA) recorded a record by handling 7.3 million TEUs, an increase of 13.5% year-on-year.

In addition, Indian ports as a whole dedicated 962 acres of land to port-led industrialization, which will earn an income of ₹7,565 crore in FY 2024-25, 1 with future investments by lessees reaching ₹68,780 crore. Private sector investment has picked up quite nicely, with private sector investment in PPP projects having tripled to ₹3,986 crore in FY 2024-25.
