The Election Commission of India has officially declared the results for 542 out of 543 Lok Sabha constituencies. The Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) has emerged as the leading party, winning 240 seats. This result, while significant, marks a notable decrease from their previous tallies of 303 seats in 2019 and 282 seats in 2014.
Lok Sabha Election 2024
The 2024 Lok Sabha election, one of the largest democratic exercises in the world, was held to elect members to the 18th Lok Sabha, the lower house of India’s Parliament. This election, conducted in seven phases from April to May 2024, saw intense competition primarily between the ruling National Democratic Alliance (NDA), led by the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP), and the opposition Indian National Developmental Inclusive Alliance (INDIA), spearheaded by the Congress party. With over 90 crore eligible voters, the stakes were high, and the outcome was pivotal for India’s political landscape.
Lok Sabha Election Results 2024
The Election Commission of India has declared the results for 542 out of 543 Lok Sabha constituencies. The Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) has emerged as the leading party, winning 240 seats. This result, while significant, marks a notable decrease from their previous tallies of 303 seats in 2019 and 282 seats in 2014.
BJP’s Performance and Alliances
Despite not securing a simple majority of 272 seats, the BJP is set to form the government for a third consecutive term with the support of its allies in the National Democratic Alliance (NDA). Key allies contributed significantly to this outcome:
- Telugu Desam Party (TDP): Won 16 seats in Andhra Pradesh.
- Janata Dal (United) [JD(U)]: Secured 12 seats in Bihar.
These alliances, along with support from other partners, enabled the NDA to cross the halfway mark in the 542-member Lok Sabha.
Congress and Opposition INDIA Bloc
The Indian National Congress (INC), part of the opposition INDIA bloc, improved its performance by winning 99 seats, up from 52 in 2019. This surge helped the opposition make significant inroads against the BJP in various states.
- Samajwadi Party (SP): Enhanced the opposition’s presence in Uttar Pradesh by winning 37 seats.
- Trinamool Congress (TMC): Increased its seats in West Bengal from 22 to 29, diminishing the BJP’s influence in the state.

Election Results 2024 Impact on Indian Stock Market
Election results triggered significant volatility in the Indian stock market, with sharp declines observed in benchmark indices.
- Contradiction to Expectations: Results contradicted exit poll predictions, leading to surprise and uncertainty among investors regarding the political landscape’s implications for economic policies.
- Sectoral Responses:
- FMCG Stocks: Witnessed strength as investors sought refuge in stable and defensive sectors amid uncertainty.
- Financial and Infrastructure Sectors: Experienced pressure due to concerns over potential delays in policy implementation and infrastructure projects.
- Foreign Institutional Investors (FIIs): Played a crucial role in determining market movements, with their actions contributing to overall volatility.
- Expectations and Adjustments: As the new government takes shape and policy directions become clearer, the market is expected to adjust accordingly, reflecting evolving expectations and perceptions of economic stability and growth prospects.
Who Form Government?
In the scenario described, where the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) won 240 seats in the Lok Sabha elections of 2024, falling short of a simple majority, they would need to rely on their allies within the National Democratic Alliance (NDA) to form the government. Key allies such as the Telugu Desam Party (TDP) and Janata Dal (United) [JD(U)] won significant seats, contributing to the overall majority of the NDA coalition.
Therefore, it is likely that the BJP-led NDA coalition would form the government for the third consecutive term, with Prime Minister Narendra Modi poised to continue his tenure. However, the exact composition of the government, including ministerial positions and policy agendas, would depend on the negotiations and agreements between the BJP and its coalition partners.
