As the democratic juggernaut of India rolls on, Phase 4 of the Lok Sabha Elections 2024 commenced with fervor and anticipation. With 96 constituencies spread across 10 states and Union Territories, this phase promises to be a pivotal moment in shaping the political landscape of the nation.

Phase 4 witnesses a plethora of significant contests and candidates vying for parliamentary seats. From the Samajwadi Party’s stalwart, Akhilesh Yadav, contesting from Kannauj, to the formidable presence of Trinamool Congress’s Mahua Moitra in Krishnanagar, and the prominent AIMIM Chief Asaduddin Owaisi battling it out in Hyderabad, the electoral landscape is rich with diversity and dynamism.

Furthermore, the contest in Baharampur, where Congress veteran Adhir Ranjan Chowdhury faces off against former Indian cricketer Yusuf Pathan of the TMC, exemplifies the fusion of sports and politics, highlighting the multi-dimensional nature of Indian democracy.

Lok Sabha Election 2024 Parties and Alliances

As the 2024 Indian general elections approach, the political landscape is marked by a growing bipolarity, characterized by two dominant alliances: the incumbent National Democratic Alliance (NDA) and the opposition Indian National Developmental Inclusive Alliance (INDIA). Six national parties are actively participating in the electoral contest:

  • Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP)
  • Indian National Congress (INC)
  • Communist Party of India (Marxist) (CPI-M)
  • Bahujan Samaj Party (BSP)
  • National People’s Party (NPP)
  • Aam Aadmi Party (AAP)

It is noteworthy that all these parties, except the BSP, align themselves with either the NDA or the INDIA alliance.

Electoral System of Lok Sabha Election 2024

  • The Lok Sabha consists of 543 Members of Parliament (MPs), each elected from individual constituencies through a first-past-the-post voting system.
  • Following the 104th constitutional amendment, the two seats reserved for the Anglo-Indian community have been eliminated.
  • For eligibility to vote, individuals must be Indian citizens, aged 18 or older, residing in the polling area of the constituency, and registered in the electoral rolls.
  • Additionally, voters are required to possess a valid voter identification card issued by the Election Commission of India or an equivalent document.
  • Some individuals convicted of electoral or other offenses are disqualified from participating in the voting process.
  • According to Article 83 of the Constitution of India, elections for the Lok Sabha must take place once every five years.
