• Kannadippaya (Mirror Mat), a unique tribal handicraft from Kerala, has received the Geographical Indication (GI) tag.
  • It is the first tribal handicraft product from Kerala to receive the GI tag. It is made from the soft inner layers of reed bamboo.
• Gucci Mushroom from Jammu and Kashmir is gaining attention as it is acquiring a Geographical Indication tag.
• Similipal Kai Chutney, produced by tribal communities in Odisha’s Mayurbhanj district using red weaver ants, obtained the Geographical Indication tag on January 2, 2024.

Paris Convention for the Protection of Industrial Property (1883)

• One of the first international agreements to acknowledge GIs as intellectual property.
• Promotes protection against unfair competition and false indications of origin.

Madrid Agreement for the Repression of False or Deceptive Indications of Source on Goods (1891)

• Seeks to avoid the use of false geographical indications on goods traded internationally.
• Emphasizes safeguarding the reputation and authenticity of origin-based products.
  

Lisbon Agreement for the Protection of Appellations of Origin (1958)

• Provides an international framework for the registration and protection of appellations of origin (a form of GI).
