Chief Air Marshal of India
Chief Marshal is the chief of the military staff of the Indian Air Force. Unless the Chief of Defence Staff of the Indian Armed Services is considered an officer of the aerial branch of the armed forces, the CAS is the leader of the Air Force’s governing body and is normally the Air Force’s highest-ranking officer. In the Indian Air Force, an air chief marshal is a four-star air officer rank. It is the Indian Air Force’s highest active rank. Air chief marshal is a three-star rank above air marshal and a five-star rank below Marshal of the Indian Air Force, which is primarily a wartime or ceremonial rank. The Chief of the Air Staff, the professional head of the Indian Air Force, holds this rank. When the holder is a serving Indian Air Force officer, the Chief of Defence Staff may also hold the rank. Office of the Air Chief Marshal of India
After India gained independence, the chief of the Air Force was given the title “Air Marshal Commanding, Royal Indian Air Force.” On 1 March 1948, the title “Chief of the Air Staff” was added to maintain uniformity across the three armed forces, followed by a re-designation to “Chief of the Air Staff and Commander-in-Chief, Royal Indian Air Force” on 21 June. The “Royal” designation was dropped when India became a republic on January 26, 1950. As a result, the Indian Air Force’s commander-in-chief has been renamed “Chief of the Air Staff and Commander-in-Chief, Indian Air Force.”The name of the IAF’s top officer was changed to “Chief of Air Staff” by the Commanders-in-Chief (Change in Designation) Act of 1955. A three-star Air Marshal held the position until 1966 when it was promoted to the four-star level of Air Chief Marshal. The Cabinet Appointments Committee is in charge of making appointments to the position (ACC). The CAS leaves office after three years or when he or she reaches the age of 62, whichever comes first.
