History of International Youth Day

International Youth Day was first proposed by young people themselves. In 1991, during the inaugural session of the World Youth Forum within the United Nations System, held in Vienna, Austria, the idea of a dedicated day to highlight youth issues was put forward.

The proposal gained momentum, and in 1998, the World Conference of Ministers Responsible for Youth, held in Lisbon, Portugal, officially adopted a resolution proclaiming August 12th as International Youth Day. This decision was subsequently endorsed by the United Nations General Assembly in 1999.

Since its inception in 2000, International Youth Day has been celebrated annually to draw attention to the challenges and potential of young people worldwide.
