History of International Widows Day 2023

The inaugural International Widows Day was established in 2005 by The Loomba Foundation. The founder’s mother, Shrimati Pushpa Wati Loomba, became a widow on June 23, 1954, hence it is significant that this day was chosen on that date. The foundation chose that day in an effort to draw attention to the situation of widows who suffer from poverty and suffering all around the world.

This day raises awareness of the economic hardships and social stigma that several women experience after losing their husbands. The Loomba Foundation, who organised a determined five-year campaign, put in a concerted effort, though, to win the support of the UN General Assembly. International Widows Day was formally established by the UN in 2010 to increase its relevance on a global basis.
