Indian President Droupadi Murmu launched the Indian Navy’s advanced stealth frigate, INS Vindhyagiri on August 17, at Garden Reach Shipbuilders and Engineers Limited (GRSE), which is located close to the Hooghly River’s bank in Kolkata, West Bengal. “I am delighted to be present for the INS Vindhyagiri’s Launch said the President of India.” At the INS Vindhyagiri launch ceremony, President Murmu stated that this event is a step forward in improving India’s maritime capabilities.

It was a moment of pride for the Indian Navy when Indian President Droupadi Murmu launched INS Vindhyagiri, an advanced stealth frigate, at Garden Reach Shipbuilders and Engineers Ltd’s. It is a new addition to Indian Navy and is ready to add new success in future.

INS Vindhyagiri Frigate

It has the name of a Karnataka mountain range. The sixth of the Project 17A frigates is a ship. The Project 17 Class Frigates (Shivalik Class) were followed by these warships, which had platform management systems, better stealth features, and cutting-edge armaments and sensors. Four ships are being built as part of the Project 17A plan by the Mumbai-based Mazagon Dock Shipbuilders Limited (MDL) and three more by the Garden Reach Shipbuilders and Engineers Limited (GRSE).

MDL and GRSE launched the project’s first five ships between 2019 and 2022. The Warship Design Bureau of the Indian Navy created these ships internally. Up to 75% of Project 17A ship equipment and system orders come from domestic companies, including MSMEs.

What is Project 17A of the Indian Navy?

The Indian Navy launched Project 17 Alpha Frigates (P-17A) in 2019. The project, which is now being carried out by two businesses, Mazagon Dock Shipbuilders (MDL) and Garden Reach Shipbuilders & Engineers (GRSE), was started by the Indian defence forces to build a number of stealth guided-missile frigates.

These guided-missile frigates were built using a special stealth design that has radar-absorbent coatings and is low-observable, making it possible for them to approach without being seen by adversaries. The ship’s infrared emissions are likewise diminished by the new technology. Seven ships are being built as part of the P17A programme, with four at MDL and three at GRSE. The ships have been named INS Nilgiri, INS Himgiri, INS Udaygiri, INS Dunagiri, INS Taragiri, INS Vindhyagiri and INS Mahendragiri after the names of hill ranges in India.

Old INS Vindhyagiri

In its nearly 31 years of service, from 8 July 1981 to 11 June 2012, it served as the sixth and final Nilgiri class frigate. During that time, it participated in numerous international exercises and carried out maritime surveillance, coastal patrol, and anti-piracy operations. After suffering damage in a collision with a merchant ship in 2011, it was deactivated.
