INS Jatayu

INS Jatayu is a new naval base commissioned by the Indian Navy on March 6, 2024 on Minicoy Island in the Lakshadweep Islands.  INS Jatayu is the second naval base in Lakshadweep, following INS Dweeprakshak in Kavaratti, Kerala. The base is India’s forward operating naval base in the Arabian Sea, named after a character in Hindu mythology. The Indian Navy commissioned INS Jatayu to boost security infrastructure at the Lakshadweep Islands and enhance the operational capabilities of the Indian Navy in the region.

The Indian Navy commissioned INS Jatayu on March 6, 2024 at Minicoy, the southernmost island in the Lakshadweep Islands. The base is an upgraded naval base that will help boost the Indian Navy’s security infrastructure at the Lakshadweep Islands. The base will also help the Indian Navy’s anti-piracy and anti-narcotics operations in the Western Arabian Sea.
The base will turn an existing small detachment into an independent naval unit. It will also help the Indian Navy’s operational capability in the region.
INS Jatayu is named after the base in Hindu mythology. It is India’s forward operating naval base in the Arabian Sea and will act as a sentinel and respond to threats from Somali pirates, Houthi militants, and Chinese expansionism.
