India’s First Organic Fisheries Cluster
- The Union Minister for Fisheries has launched the First-of-its-kind initiative in India to promote organic fisheries and aquaculture under Pradhan Mantri Matsya Sampada Yojana (PMMSY) Soreng District, Sikkim.
- It aligns with Sikkim’s status as an organic farming pioneer.
- It will focus on eco-conscious markets for premium organic fish products.
- Existing Clusters in India:
- Pearl Cluster: Hazaribagh, Jharkhand.
- Ornamental Fisheries Cluster: Madurai, Tamil Nadu.
- Seaweed Cluster: Lakshadweep.
- Tuna Cluster: Andaman & Nicobar Islands.
Pradhan Mantri Matsya Sampada Yojana (PMMSY)

Goals
- Increase Fish Production: Target 22 million metric tons by 2024-25 (from 13.75 million metric tons in 2018-19).
- Enhance Aquaculture Productivity: Increase to 5 tons per hectare.
- Boost Domestic Fish Consumption: Raise from 5 kg to 12 kg per capita by 2024-25.
- Increase Fisheries Sector Contribution: Target Agriculture Gross Value Addition (GVA) to about 9% by 2024-25 (from 7.28% in 2018-19).
- Double Exports: Aim to increase exports from Rs. 46,589 crore in 2018-19 to Rs. 1,00,000 crore by 2024-25.
