About Tuna Species

  • Tuna are large, fast-swimming fish found in tropical and temperate oceans worldwide.
  • Tuna are known for their speed, with some species able to swim up to 50 miles per hour. They can swim so fast because of their streamlined bodies, smooth skin and streamlined fins
  • There are over 15 species of tuna, with some of the most well-known being Bluefin, Yellowfin, Albacore, Bigeye and Skipjack.
  • They grow quickly and live for several decades, with species like Bluefin reaching over 450 kg in weight.
  • Tuna are known for their long migrations, with some travelling across the Atlantic Ocean to feed and breed.
Indian Ocean TUNA Commission
  • It is an Intergovernmental Organization established in 1993. (HQ- Victoria, Seychelles)
  • It is responsible for the management of tuna and tuna-like species in the Indian Ocean.
  • IOTC currently has 31 contracting parties who are members of the IOTC and two Cooperating non-Contracting Parties, Liberia and Senegal.
    • India joined as a member in 1995.
  • The decisions taken by the commission are binding on all Members and non-contracting Parties.
