Department for Promotion of Industry and Internal Trade (DPIIT)
Department for Promotion of Industry and Internal Trade: It is a division of the central government that operates under the Ministry of Commerce and Industry. The formulation and execution of promotional and developmental actions for the expansion of the industrial sector are the responsibility of Department for Promotion of Industry and Internal Trade (DPIIT).
While a number of separate administrative ministries are in charge of the production, distribution, development, and planning of various sectors, the department is in charge of the overall industrial strategy. On January 27, 2019, the name “Department of Industrial Policy & Promotion” was changed to “Department of Industrial Policy & Information Technology.”

The separate ministries are responsible for the production, distribution, development, and planning aspects of the various sectors, while DIPP, which was established in 1995, is charged with developing and carrying out the country’s overall industrial policy.
The Department’s duty has changed from overseeing and regulating the industrial sector to facilitating the flow of investment and technology and keeping track of industrial progress in a liberalised environment. Programmes and Schemes under DPIIT
1971’s Transport Subsidy Scheme – It was started to promote industry in the isolated, mountainous, and difficult-to-reach places. Since 2016, it has been no longer produced.
- Policy for Promoting Industrial and Investment in the North East (NEIIPP), 2007
- The North East Industrial Development Scheme was launched on April 1, 2017, and it will last until March 30, 2022.
- 2017 Industrial Development Plan – A recent modification took into account the Union Territories of Jammu and Kashmir and Ladakh; the programme will run through March 31st, 2021. The term “New Industrial Unit” was also defined in the amendment.
- The Delhi Mumbai Industrial Corridor (DMIC) project for infrastructure development was approved in 2007. Other industrial corridors are utilised in a similar manner.
- Activities for GI promotion are undertaken by DPIIT. As of August 2020, the department had notified 370 GI applications.
