Veteran actor Mithun Chakraborty will be honoured with the prestigious Dadasaheb Phalke Award at the 70th National Film Awards ceremony on October 8, 2024. This award, the highest recognition in Indian cinema, celebrates his outstanding contribution to the industry. Mithun, who started his acting career with Mrinal Sen’s Mrigayaa in 1976, expressed his overwhelming gratitude, calling the honour a dream come true.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi also congratulated him, praising his versatile performances that have left a mark on multiple generations.

Mithun Chakraborty’s illustrious career spans over four decades, during which he became a cultural icon through films like Disco Dancer and Surakshaa, and won three National Film Awards. He has been a trailblazer in Bollywood and regional cinema, making his mark in television and digital streaming platforms.

Dadasaheb Phalke Award 2024

The prestigious Dadasaheb Phalke International Film Festival Awards took place in Mumbai, graced by the luminaries of the Indian film fraternity. A galaxy of stars including Shah Rukh Khan, Rani Mukerji, Kareena Kapoor, Bobby Deol, and Shahid Kapoor adorned the glamorous event.

The ceremony recognized outstanding contributions to cinema in 2023, with Shah Rukh Khan clinching the Best Actor award for his role in “Jawan,” and Rani Mukerji securing the Best Actress award for her performance in “Mrs Chatterjee vs Norway.”
Notably, Telugu filmmaker Sandeep Reddy Vanga was honoured with the Best Director award for his Hindi film “Animal,” despite eliciting mixed reactions from both the industry and audiences.

The awards extended beyond Indian cinema, acknowledging Christopher Nolan’s “Oppenheimer” as the Best International Feature Film, following its triumphant sweep at the BAFTA night.

Television luminaries were also recognized, with Rupali Ganguly winning Best Actress in a Television Series for her portrayal in “Anupamaa,” and Neil Bhatt bagging the Best Actor in a Television Series award for his role in “Ghum Hai Kisikey Pyaar Meiin.”
In the realm of OTT, Shahid Kapoor emerged victorious as the Best Actor in a Web Series for “Farzi,” while Sushmita Sen shone as the Best Actress in a Web Series for “Aarya 3.”

The list of winners also includes esteemed names like Bobby Deol for Best Actor in a Negative Role, Anil Kapoor for Best Actor in a Supporting Role, and Nayanthara for Most Versatile Actress, among others.

Dadasaheb Phalke Award History

It took Dhundiraj Govind Phalke, who is regarded as the founder of Indian film, as its name source. He was a seasoned director who produced Raja Harishchandra, the country’s first feature-length motion picture, in 1913. The honorees receive a shawl, a medallion known as the Swarna Kamal (Golden Lotus), and a monetary prize of Rs. 10 lahks.

Among the notable honorees are well-known figures like Satyajit Ray, Nagi Reddy, Raj Kapoor, Lata Mangeshkar, Akkineni Nageswara Rao, Dilip Kumar, Sivaji Ganesan, and Asha Bhosle. On October 25, 2021, a well-known actor, producer, and screenwriter named Rajnikanth received the award for the year 2019 in recognition of his enduring and regal contributions to Indian cinema. The actor has previously received the Padma Bhushan and Padma Vibhushan awards (2016). 52 recipients have received awards as of 2022. Due to the coronavirus, awards were postponed for the years 2020 and 2021.

Two years after the Covid-19 pandemic ended the famous event, President Droupadi Murmu and Information and Broadcasting Minister Anurag Thakur will present the 68th National Film Awards on September 30, 2022, in keeping with the more than 60-year-old tradition. The Dadasaheb Phalke award for 2020 has been given to veteran actress Asha Parekh, making her the 52nd recipient of the honour.
