Every year at the National Film Awards ceremony, the Directorate of Film Festivals, a company founded by the Ministry of Information and Broadcasting, presents the Dadasaheb Phalke Award. For their “great contribution to the growth and development of Indian cinema,” the recipient is acknowledged. And a committee made up of well-known members of the Indian cinema industry selects these prizes.

Waheeda Rehman will be conferred with the prestigious Dadasaheb Phalke Lifetime Achievement Award this year.

Dadasaheb Phalke Award 2023 History

The Dadasaheb Phalke Awards, given yearly at the National Film Awards event by the Directorate of Film Festivals, a company established by the Ministry of Information and broadcasting, is India’s highest honour in the film industry. Devika Rani was the inaugural recipient of this honour, receiving it in 1969 in conjunction with the 17th National Cinema Awards.

As the “Father of Indian Cinema,” Dadasaheb Phalke is renowned. Raja Harishchandra, India’s first feature-length motion picture, was created by him in 1913. Hence, the Government of India established the Dadasaheb Phalke Prize in 1969 to honour him.

Honoured for their “great contribution to the growth and development of Indian cinema” are the honorees. A panel of distinguished individuals from the Indian cinema industry chooses the recipients of the Dadasaheb Phalke Award. The prize includes a shawl, a medallion called Swarna Kamal (Golden Lotus), and Rs. 10 lakh in cash.
