About Chennai-Vladivostok Maritime Corridor
- The corridor connects the Indian port city of Chennai (Tamil Nadu) on the Bay of Bengal with Vladivostok, a prominent port in Russia’s Far East located on the Golden Horn Bay.
- Vladivostok is the largest port on Russia’s Pacific coast and serves as a strategic gateway to the Pacific Ocean for Russia.
- It reduces shipping time between Chennai and Vladivostok to 24 days, compared to 40 days via traditional Europe-based shipping routes.
- The route passes through the Sea of Japan, South China Sea and the Malacca Strait.
- The route is expected to reduce the distance between India and Russia from the current duration of 32 days (from Port of Mumbai to the Port of St. Petersburg through the route covering the Red Sea, Mediterranean Sea and Baltic Sea) to just 12 days.
- India is building a nuclear power plant with Russia’s collaboration in Kudankulam in Tamil Nadu’s Tirunelveli district. The opening of this sea route will help in the project.
