Centre sets up three AI research hubs on Health, Agri and Cities

What is the Centre of Excellence (COE) ?

• Centres of Excellence (CoEs) in Artificial Intelligence (AI) are specialised institutions or initiatives designed to advance research, development and application of AI technologies across various sectors.
• Objectives of CoE:
  • Innovation: They aim to foster innovation in AI by developing cutting-edge technologies and solutions that can be implemented in real-world scenarios.
  • Research Collaboration: CoEs collaborate with academic institutions, industries, and governmental bodies to promote multidisciplinary research and to bridge the gap between theoretical research and practical applications.
  • Talent Development: They play a crucial role in nurturing talent by providing training, internships and real-world project experiences for students and professionals interested in AI.

AI Centre of Excellence in Healthcare

• Lead Institutions: Indian Institute of Technology Delhi (IIT Delhi) and All India Institute of Medical Sciences (AIIMS).
• Focus Areas:
  • This CoE will concentrate on early disease prediction, diagnostics and pandemic tracking.
  • It aims to integrate AI with both traditional and modern medical systems, including AYUSH (Ayurveda, Yoga & Naturopathy, Unani, Siddha, and Homeopathy).
• Goals: The centre seeks to improve healthcare delivery by addressing issues related to affordability, quality and access to medical services. It will foster innovations that can enhance health outcomes across the population.

AI Centre of Excellence in Agriculture

• Lead Institution: IIT Ropar.
• Focus Areas:
  • This CoE will leverage AI technologies to transform agricultural practices.
  • It aims to provide real-time guidance on crop health, weather patterns, and local agricultural conditions.
• Goals: By combining traditional farming knowledge with AI insights, the centre intends to improve crop quality, reduce losses and enhance animal husbandry practices. This initiative is vital for strengthening food security in India.

AI Centre of Excellence in Sustainable Cities

• Lead Institution: IIT Kanpur.
• Focus Areas:
  • This CoE will focus on smart city planning, traffic management and efficient resource distribution.
  • It will utilise data from various sources such as sensors and satellite feeds to optimise urban management.
• Goals: The centre aims to improve urban living conditions by predicting resource needs and enhancing the design of urban spaces for sustainability and efficiency.
