The Best Country Rankings, published by U.S. News & World Report, provide an assessment of countries based on global perceptions rather than just hard data. In the 2023 rankings, 87 countries are assessed, and the rankings are determined through a comprehensive survey involving more than 17,000 people representing diverse backgrounds and perspectives.

The process of ranking countries begins with survey participants associating various characteristics with different nations. These characteristics could include qualities like “innovative” or “politically stable.” Each survey participant evaluates a subset of these characteristics for a subset of countries, and the more times a characteristic is linked to a country, the higher its score for that characteristic.

The rankings are based on scores across 73 different characteristics, which are further grouped into 10 thematic categories such as “Entrepreneurship,” “Quality of Life,” and “Agility.” Each category is assigned a specific weight in the overall ranking, depending on its relevance to a country’s prosperity.

Ultimately, countries are ranked based on their scores, with the top-ranked country considered the best in the world according to these global perceptions. The rankings reflect how people perceive countries, and these perceptions can have a significant impact on trade, travel, investment, and other factors that influence national economies and international relationships.
