About Animal Welfare Board of India (AWBI)

  • The Animal Welfare Board of India is a statutory advisory body on Animal Welfare Laws and promotes animal welfare in the country.
  • It was established in 1962 under Section 4 of the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals (PCA) Act, 1960.
  • It was started under the stewardship of Rukmini Devi Arundale (noted animal rights activist).

  • Nodal Ministry: Ministry of Fisheries, Animal Husbandry and Dairying.
  • Composition: The Board consists of 28 Members, including 6 Members of Parliament (2 from Rajya Sabha and 4 from Lok Sabha). The term of office of Members is for a period of 3 years.
  • Objectives: The Board ensures that animal welfare laws in the country are diligently followed, provides grants to Animal Welfare Organizations and advises the Government of India on animal welfare issues.

Key Functions of AWBI

  • Promoting animal welfare initiatives across India.
  • Granting recognition & financial aid to animal welfare organizations.
  • Implementing and ensuring compliance with the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals (PCA) Act, 1960.
  • Advising the Government on policy formulation and animal welfare laws.
