Amnesty International History

Amnesty International is a non-governmental organisation based in London that was founded in 1961. The organization’s goal is to build a future in which everyone has access to all of the human rights guaranteed by the Universal Declaration of Human Rights and other international human rights standards.
In 1948, the Universal Declaration of Human Rights was adopted. It universally recognised fundamental human rights for the first time. It also conducts research, mobilises action to prevent serious violations of human rights, and seeks justice for those whose rights have been infringed. In 1977, the organisation received the Nobel Peace Prize for its “defence of human dignity against torture,” and in 1978, it received the United Nations Award in the category of Human Rights.

Amnesty International Foundation

Peter Benenson, who founded the organisation in London, sought to file an appeal in Britain to achieve amnesty for prisoners of conscience (those arrested for their convictions, faith, race, or skin colour, and who have not used force against others) around the world. Peter Benenson was horrified when two Portuguese students were arrested for raising a freedom toast. Amnesty International became worldwide in 1963, with the founding of an international secretariat, after years of slow expansion.

This organisation is independent of governments, political parties, ideologies, or religious differences, and its focus has shifted from the release of political prisoners to the abolition of the death penalty, the protection of sexual and reproductive rights, and the enforcement of refugee and migrant rights.

Amnesty International Human Rights

Amnesty International is a non-governmental organisation that advocates for human rights around the world. The group believes that everyone, regardless of race, gender, religion, nationality, or other status, should have access to all of the human rights stated in the International Declaration of Human Rights.

Amnesty International works in a variety of ways to promote and protect human rights. The group conducts research and investigations into human rights violations and then produces reports that detail its findings. It also advocates for governments, international organisations, and other stakeholders to take action to redress human rights breaches and promote human rights respect.

Amnesty International India

Amnesty International India was a section of Amnesty International, a global human rights organisation formed in 1961. For more than three decades, the organisation maintained a presence in India, where it worked to promote and preserve human rights. Amnesty International India worked on a variety of human rights problems, including the abolition of the death penalty, the promotion of women’s rights and gender equality, and the fight against discrimination and hate crimes.

However, Amnesty International India was forced to stop activities in the country in 2020 when the Indian government froze the organization’s bank accounts and accused it of breaking Indian laws. Since then, Amnesty International India has taken the Indian government to court, claiming that its actions are politically motivated and an attack on free expression and human rights in the country.

On 16 February 2021, the Enforcement Directorate attached the organization’s possessions worth 17.66 crores (approximately $2.4 million at the time) in connection with an alleged violation of the Foreign Contribution Control Act” (FCRA).
